This piece is from my series of paintings paying homage to the great masters.This painting is inspired by the work of Henri Matisse. Matisse was one of the most innovative artists of the 20th century, equalled only by Picasso. The curtain on the right is influenced by the painting " The Egyptian Curtain" 1948, probably the greatest of all Matisse's paintings, one of his most brilliant demostrations of understanding light. The figure is based on Blue Figure II " 1952. The guitar and sheet music are characteristic of Matisse's work. The flowers symbolise the fragility of life and beauty, a motif which features frequently in my work.
John Nolan was born in Dublin Ireland in 1958. He has developed a very distinctive style which is instantly recognisable. John Nolan's exuberant style combines bold outlines with bright exotic colours. His interpretation of various motifs transmits a positive upbeat feeling to his viewers. The celebration of colour and form, has preoccupied him from an early age and was nurtured through the encouragement and instruction received from his father who wa also an artist. www.nolanart.com
